Snowmass is one of my home mountains and one of my favorites in CO - it's huge, with lot's of variety. It's also the most popular mountain in Aspen/Snowmass because of it's size and varied terrain, so it sometimes gets a bit more crowded (though crowds anywhere here are fairly minimal. Snowmass
Ajax is one of my local mountains - I would disagree with the description about it being full of "groms." In fact, the mountain is steep and has no green runs, so the kids & beginners tend to stick to Buttermilk.
It's a fun mountain on a powder day, but it's pretty small and all about the stereotypical Aspen scene: uber-rich people who party hard. Expect to see celebrity types in one-piece ski outfits with fur collars.
Aspen Mountain (aka Ajax)
Highlands is one of my favorite mountains - it's primarily known for deep temerity and the highland bowl, where you can expect steep and deep... a 15-30 minute hike is required for the bowl, but it's worth it! Great backcountry access here too, but a lot of it is very dangerous/avalanche prone. Aspen Highlands
Silverton is awesome, and a one of a kind place - it's basically lift accessed backcountry terrain, with steeps, huge drops, and plenty of powder. Guides are required for most of the year.
Don't expect much in the way of lodging or nightlife, the town is a quirky old mining town - the hotels are pretty old, and there are only a few bars and restaurants.
one thing to note - the prices in the description only apply to the unguided riding (only available early and late season on limited terrain). During much of the year, you must travel with a guide, and this ticket ranges from $100-130. Even during the unguided season, you may have more fun with a guide, since they can access a lot more terrain.
Also - a beacon, shovel, and probe is required, but can be rented for $30. Silverton
I lived in steamboat for a couple of years - it's a cool, chill town, but a little slow. The mountain is known for it's dry light powder, and it's aspen trees, which makes for some really fun tree runs. It's a great mountain for intermediate riders who are looking to try out some powder and trees. I wouldn't go there if you like steep terrain, it's rather flat. Also, they don't put much of an effort into their park. Steamboat
