A heavy right that breaks over sharp rocks, Mata can hold a big swell, but is fickle as fickle can be. The surrounding area is beautiful and pristine even by Costa Rican standards. Many of the accommodations near the wave are pricy eco lodges, but there are a few cheap spots that are decent enough to sleep in. The Summer usually pushes out mush for waves.
