San Juanico is a sleepy windblown fishing village that has a huge reputation and long history in surf lore. Californian surfers have been making the bum-busting trip to Scorps for decades. It is not an easy place to get to but well worth the effort. Scorpion Bay can get crowded in summer but it has an organized line-up and one can actually get a great wave to ride alone! But for the occasional idiot, it’s share and share alike, a rare thing in today’s surfing world.
The set up consist of three main point breaks:
First Point is a slow rolling right-hander that rarely breaks and ends up on the beach where the local fishermen launch and land their boats.
Second Point is a long boarders paradise. The wave is so long it can ware your legs out. The take off is right on the rocks and at low tide it rockets across the sand bar and keeps going for hundreds of yards making for a very long walk back.
Third Point is short board territory with a ripping right-hander that can offer up some of the best barrels on the peninsula.
Camping is what most surfers do but Palapas and a few Casas can be rented. There’s also a Cantina where surfers from all over world enjoy the good food and friendly atmosphere.
