General Overview

Also know as Pratte’s Reef, after the Surfrider executive director who was able to get Chevron to build it, this artificial reef is infamous for being an example of how not to pursue such a project. The Chevron Company, scared by strong winter swells, lobbied for the right to build a jetty to protect their underwater gas lines. One of the conditions they had to meet was to determine if the jetty damaged the coastal environment including the waves. After 10 years of research it was determined that the jetty did indeed disrupt the surf and Chevron went ahead and built the reef. There are waves here, but in a strange twist of fate, the jetty has become a much more popular low tide break that can get epic and crowded.
