General Overview

S-Turns got its name from the rerouting of highway 12 just behind the dune line in the shape of an S. S-Turns is located in Dare County on North Carolina's Outer Banks (OBX) about mid-way along Hatteras Island where the beach goes from a NW-SE orientation to an NE-SW direction.

The ocean has washed through many times over the years so there's no real parking area except alongside Highway 12. Be careful if you don't have a 4x4 because the shoulder is sugar sand so park with 2 tires on the edge of the pavement.

Water temps stay in the 70's in summer to mid 40's in dead of winter. Best bet for surf is Fall/Winter/Wpring and of course late Summer hurricane swells.
