General Overview
North of Florence where Yaquina River meets the Pacific is Oregon’s central coast hub, Newport. The immediate area around Newport and Yaquina Bay boast of jetties, reefs, sand dune beaches and a dedicated local crew of mellow surfers. Just bring some respect out to the line up and you’ll fit right in.
During the winter it’s just too hairy to surf but during the summer months many of the beaches can offer up a wide variety of surfing conditions. Shifting sandbars and beach-breaks mostly produce slamming close outs but on occasion epic waves can be had. The water is colder here and requires a thick hooded wetsuits and booties and a strong desire to get wet.
