West El Salvador//
With the highest population density of any other country in the Americas, El Salvador can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Luckily there are plenty of right point breaks to go around and while surf tourism established a foot hold here in the seventies it has yet to become saturated. La Punta Roca is probably the best, most consistent and sometimes intense wave in the country, but unfortunately it is located in the town of La Libertad which shares many of the unpredictable and dangerous similarities of this world class wave.
The majority of surfers, who come here, either book a tour or stay at a surf camp which in turn arranges a pick up for them at the airport. Many of the lower budget accommodations feel more like a compound than a tropical retreat, with large gates that close at sunset to keep out the riff raff. Let’s just say there won’t be many late nights stumbling home from the bars on this trip.
Despite the infamously unstable government of the past, the poverty and the resulting bad apples, El Salvador is a rich and geographically beautiful country and is by no means “tamed”. The waves are arguably the best in Central America and with the upward trend in surf travel it won’t be long until people will be pondering “do you remember when…”

El Salvador picks up year round swell, but is best in the summer months (wet season) when it’s southern facing coastline produces perfect rights.

West El Salvador: Pick a point break and point break… Punta Roca is the best of the bunch, but there are plenty more that won’t disappoint.

Health: Don’t drink unfiltered water, mosquitoes carrying diseases and other tropical hazards.

Crime: Like in any county, the more dangerous areas are the ones that are more populated. El Salvador has the unfortunate reputation of being the most dangerous of the Central American countries.
