Indonesia is a collection of 18,110 islands and makes up the largest archipelago in the world. This voluminous gathering of islands supplies nearly 70,000 miles of beaches and provides almost every type of surf break imaginable! Indonesia is an exotic equatorial destination and is blessed with consistently warm weather and year-round surf.
Popular surf spots are located off the coasts of Bali, Java, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba Timor and Flores. The breaks here cater to all level riders and you’ll find everything from long, slow beach breaks to fast, barreling reef breaks. Indonesia has two kinds of climate: hot and wet (October to April), hot and dry (May to September). The best conditions are during the dry season but there’s never a bad time to surf in Indonesia. With thousands of uninhabited islands and surf spots yet to be discovered, Indonesia is the ultimate surf destination and will continue to beckon surfers for years to come.
Health: Virtually every disease known to man can be found in some corner of Indonesia so be very careful with what you eat, drink, and come in contact with. Don't drink the tap water and watch out for dirty ice. Drinking water is free in most hotels but make sure to check the seal on water bottles. Pack your required meds with you along with a copy of the prescription. Vaccinations and precautionary measures against malaria, Japanese B encephalitis, Dengue fever, Giardiasis, rabies and hepatitis are recommended.
Safety: Indonesia is not for the faint hearted. The country has been riddled with natural disasters, crime, terrorism, civil strife, and corruption. Robbery, theft, and pick-pocketing is common, especially in urban areas, public transit, and crowded/popular tourist destinations. Signs that read "Death to Drug Traffickers" posted at the airport are very much self explanatory. Lastly, look out for crocodiles and poisonous snakes throughout the country. |
