East Puerto Rico//
Puerto Rico is a rectangular tropical island in the Caribbean between the Dominican Republic and the US Virgin Islands with lush mountains and pristine beaches. The perennial summer in Puerto Rico makes every day a beach day with an average of twelve hours of sunlight 365 days a year. May through November is considered hurricane season and is understandably the low tourist season in PR.

To say that Puerto Rico is a surf friendly country would be a serious understatement. Rincon is Puerto Rico’s prized surf destination and is the reason why PR is often called the “Hawaii of the East”. Peak season runs from October through February but you’ll always see at least a few boards in the water from August through April. Most stand-out spots are found on the north-west corner of the island between Isabela (around Punta Borinquén) and Rincón. Punta Tuna-Maunabo on the southeast corner also offers great conditions.

Health: The sun is very strong in PR and can burn easily. Tap water is safe to drink but many visitors play it safe and stick to bottled water. Puerto Rico is free of most diseases that plague most tropical countries but take precautions agains Hepatitis.

Safety: Puerto Rico has a serious crime problem with most of it drug related and concentrated in the big metropolitan cities of San Juan and Ponce. While tourist areas of both cities are heavily patrolled by police, and violent crimes directed against tourists are very rare, use caution and common sense. Travel in groups and don't be flashy with your cash or your gear.
