Southeast Uruguay//
Uruguay, the second smallest country in South America, is big on beach resorts and is most famous for true gauchos (cowboys), huge steaks, and world class beaches. The west coast of Uruguay is known as the “Riviera” of South America and is home to some of the most pristine beach resorts in the world. Since the main attractions here are the beaches, expect to find crowds during the summer months (December-April) when jet-setters from Europe and S. America come to enjoy the white sands and warm hospitality.

The climate is windy most of the year and provides wind swells at many beach and point breaks. Although the sun can be scorching during the summer months, wetsuits are recommended for at least the colder half of the year. Surf breaks near the city of Punta del Este are the most accessible and can get pumping during the winter months (June-August). You’ll also find the most hotels and the best night life in Punta del Este. You’re guaranteed to eat incredible food, see beautiful women, catch some waves and have a good time in Uruguay!

There are no jungles and therefore almost no threat of tropical diseases like malaria. The tap water is clean and safe to drink. Precautions should be taken against Hepatitis.

Uruguay is one of the safest countries in South America, but use common sense by traveling in groups and not being flashy with your cash or your gear.
